I learned how to read and bracket if necessary with a needle point system. I just adjusted the shutter speed or the f stop to the setting I required then took the photo. But with all the possibilities in these cameras it can be hard work wading your way through the various settings and applications. The trick is, I have decided, to reset the menu to manual and only shoot in RAW. Ignore the histograms and other shooting formats. Then download the pictures to your computer and adjust as necessary. The 1000D for Dummies is certainly helping me to get to grips with the camera and its various functions and I am actually getting some very reasonable shots after following event the most basic instructions in the book. It is very easy to follow and is better than the booklet that came with the camera. I am looking forward to getting even better results once I have managed to get through the all of the book and should, by that time, know the camera and its operation inside out. The first point is that it is currently the cheapest DSLR, the only other one in this range is Nikon D3000. The biggest drawback in that is that it has CCD sensor while canon has CMOS sensor. Also one more draw back is in Nikon D3000 you can set AEB (Auto Exposure Bracketing). If you are looking to shot HDR pics then you will feel the loss.
